Hair loss is a progressive disorder which may at times show peak incidence and some times gradual but mostly it’s difficult to get rid from it. Many treatment options are available and are often used by the patients. Most of the times patients correlate start of hair loss with some place, disease or after child birth in case of females. Hair loss in males and females usually follow a particular pattern. Hair loss in males is seen as to start from receding hair line along with bitemporal thinning and hair loss. Hair loss or baldness May then progress to other parts of the scalp and in males may then involve vertex area thinning and baldness and then the mid part of the crown. Finally the hair loss may coalesce and total baldness May be seen. The area below the line joining the wars is mostly resistant to hair loss and is mostly used as donor area for hair transplant.
The aim of hair loss treatment is to first analyse and stop progressing hair loss before hair transplant is taken up as hair transplant is just a reposition of your own scalp hair. The donor area permanently losses its hair when it’s transferred to the other area which is having hair loss or baldness. There is as such no growth actually of the hair on the scalp. It’s just a transposition of hair from the donor area to the area of baldness. Not all hair taken from donor area would get harvested at the Baldness area. Since it’s a surgical procedure some hair don’t tend to grow when transplanted and there may be approximately a loss of 10%, even if all careful surgical techniques is fine. Frontal areas uptake the graft better followed by temporal area. Vertex area Transplant results may not be so appreciated by the patient and later on Patient may loose the Hair transplanted on vertex area. There are various medical hypothesis which are beyond the scope of this article.
Other therapies, of which the most popular one is PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma, is gaining importance as it has virtually no side effects and well tolerated by patient. The aim of this therapy to get back the lost hair through injections of Platelet Rich Plasma. Since no donor area is needed for such area , and the hair which have turned thin or vellus can be grown back with this therapy. Since the procedure doesn’t involve any transposition of hair follicle so there is no loss of hair at donor area. Hair in this procedure seems to multiply and as such new growth can be seen at areas of hair thinning and hair diameter of exsisting hair follicle also increases. The dormant lying hair follicles also respond and new spurts of hair growth can be seen. So one see at Prp ,it’s actually a multiplication of hair and tends to increase the hair density and hair transplant is actually a transposition of Hair. In hair transplant, the donor area permanently losses its hair with a scar as no new growth of hair is there in the donor area.
Nowadays the protocol is to combine hair transplant with PRP so that hair fall is prevented and there is no future need of hair transplant. Hair transplant is also difficult to be done in patients of age of 18-30 years where hair loss is not stable and may be diffused most of the times. For such patients PRP treatment scores over hair transplant. Vertex area initial hair loss responds well to PRP and mid pattern hair loss in young patients also responds good to PRP. Prp done in a proper way by dermatologist may give very good results both in Male and Female pattern hair loss and hair thinning. Prp therapies may be done at a interval of 30-45 days and any part of the scalp can be taken up for therapy if it’s having hair loss or hair thinning.
Prp is concentrated Platelet Plasma intermix which when injected at hair thinning area may help Hair to regrow better in density and diameter. Platelets are your own blood derivatives and have many good hair regenerative and regrowth proteins which when injected at proper concentration gives very good results. Platelets are in the range of 6% in the blood volume. These platelets are concentrated by a special technique and RBC and WBC are made to remove so that most of the Plasma contains solution rich with platelets. The aim is to concentrate the platelets to a level of more then 5-6 times then that of blood level. Activators May be used to by the dermatologist to activate platelets before injecting so as to enhance the results. Prp results may be appreciated after 6 sittings and then maintenance sessions may be decided depending on the results and progression of hair loss. Prp is actually a regenerative therapy which is also used in various fields like Ortho, IVF, Dentistry, sports medicine. The regenerative capacity of activated platelets is also used for face and non healing ulcers. Platelets best respond with their growth potential if they are kept in most viable conditions as far as possible by the operating doctor.
A numbing cream or a local anaesthetic may be applied before injecting PRP solution to make the procedure more comfortable. Other procedures such as derma Roller or Mesotherapy May be used along with PRP therapy to enhance results of PRP.
